Common Climber was started by Stefani Dawn back in 2016 as an outlet for her love of climbing and writing about climbing (Stefani also owns Climb-On Maps). But she realized there are many others who share similar passions for climbing and writing (and those who enjoy reading about it), so she decided to make it a shared forum. Common Climber has now grown into a strong online presence with a wonderful variety of high quality writing.
Some articles about Common Climber:
What this website is about:
+ The goal of Common Climber is to provide fun, useful, interesting, and accurate climbing content that we, as common climbers, can relate to. We are not about chasing grades, we are about the experience and joy of climbing, no matter what grade you climb or how long you have been climbing.
+ This website is for the climbing community by the climbing community. Thoughtful submissions based on your personal experiences are invited. Please refer to the Contacts and Submissions page for guidelines.
+ There are no fees associated with submission and each author receives his or her own page. New submissions are featured on the front page. This is a great way for climbing writers to get exposure to their own blog or website. We also publish a book where photographers receive 1-2 full-page spreads and we highlight some of the stories we have received. Contributors receive free copies of the book and we select three stories to be submitted to the Banff Mountain Book competition.
+ Submissions are categorized and cataloged in several locations. They will not get lost (like blog posts often do). People can find your work in several ways: by your name, by topic, or via a list of all publications.
Climb, write, photograph, do art, and have fun doing it!
Here's what you will find:
+ Climbing writing with heart, humility, and humor - submitted by us, the common climber. Please feel free to submit something!
+ Reviews of climbing locations. Reviews provide highlights of climbing locations (type and quality of rock, and camping and amenities info), "yeahs" and "neahs" of the area, and a rating ("It Rocks!", "Worth It," "Meh," and "Trash").
+ Climbing tips and gear reviews are based upon personal experience and not solicited by vendors.
Some articles about Common Climber:
- Why I Started Common Climber (by Stefani Dawn) - If the only voice and messages we receive about what being a climber means are the ones we receive from the popular climbing media, then we will almost always be disappointed in ourselves.
- Welcome Dave Barnes! (by Stefani Dawn) - In August 2019 Dave Barnes joined Common Climber as an Associate Editor. Stefani Dawn, the Creator and Editor-in-Chief, introduces Dave and shares the story of how Dave has woken her from her slumber.
