Belay DevicesASSISTED BREAKING
There is almost no excuse not to have an assisted braking device. The Edelrid Giga Jul is affordable ($60) and does everything an ATC does and more - belay (with and without assisted breaking), guide mode, and single- or two-strand rappelling (with and without assisted breaking). We highly recommend the Edelrid Giga Jul. The other go-to assisted breaking device is the Petzl GriGri (~$130).

The Mammut Contact Slings have a smooth seam that minimize catching on the carabiner when you extent the sling when using it as an alpine draw.
