Dylan Kilby is a mountaineer, but it wasn't always that way. He grew up in northeast Florida, where "hiking" and "climbing" meant walking through sandy woods. After a spur-of-the-moment decision to apply for a job working with sled dogs in Alaska in 2015, he decided this mountain thing is actually pretty awesome. He began climbing in 2019-2020 while in graduate school, and then "got serious" in 2021.
Dylan has a traumatic brain injury (TBI) following a mountaineering fall in the northern Sierra in July 2020. While the physical effects are thankfully relegated to a metal collarbone and some admittedly cool facial scars, the mental healing took much longer. Dylan received the Paradox Sports Adaptive Adventure Fund in 2023 for five months of mountaineering in the Sierra Nevada - his favorite mountain range - and he is passionate about talking with others about risk, recovery, and working through fear.
He lives in Golden, CO with his fiancée, two cats, and collection of death metal vinyl records.
